How To Keep Your Business Systems Secure

In the modern age, most people run their businesses with the help of IT systems, and various software packages that are used daily to boost sales, and to make the day-to-day life of employees a lot easier, too. Whatever you use your business systems for, you need to make sure that they are secure, as you could end up losing a lot of data if they aren’t, and it could bring the functioning of your business to rock bottom for at least a few days.

We’ve put together some simple tips, so that you can keep your systems as secure as possible!

Use regular password change reminders

Believe it or not, the biggest issue when it comes to the security of business systems is a lack of strong passwords, and there are still plenty of people out there who are using the word ‘password’ when it comes to creating them.

This is not ideal – neither is 1234, or your name – and any passwords on your work systems should be at least 12 characters long, with uppercase letters, numbers, and symbols all used throughout. They should be changed every few months at the least, too, so make sure to set up some reminders for your employees, so that they have to change them every so often.

Think about setting up a SIEM

SIEM is an acronym for security information and event management, and whilst it sounds pretty complex (especially if you’re not too IT savvy) it’s actually a normal part of most IT departments, in businesses big and small.

A SIEM acts sort of like a hub, where data is logged concerning security threats, and unexpected behavior in your systems. This then alerts your IT department (or whoever is controlling your SIEM, as you can use SIEM-as-a-service) and you can deal with a potential cybersecurity threat before it takes hold. This is ideal for any business system, so look into your options here.

Encrypt your business emails

Aah, emails. Though you may think that your emails are safe, the likelihood is that they are actually the main port of call for potential hackers, and as such, you need to make sure that they’re encrypted.

Think about all of the times that your business sends out bills and invoices, with sensitive personal data on them. If a hacker can access this, then they may be able to use somebody’s identity, or their bank details, for fraudulent purposes. If you want to make sure that you avoid these risks, then encrypt your emails, so that personal, sensitive data is kept between the sender and the recipient.

So, if you want to make sure that your business systems are secure, then keep these things in mind. From regularly getting your team members to change their passwords, to setting up a SIEM and encrypting your business emails, there are many ways to stay on top of your security, that aren’t too time-consuming, or costly. Good luck staying safe within your own business systems, and within other pieces of software, too!
