How To Nurture Better Habits

We all have habits. Habits are a behaviour which we often do without noticing and it is something which can be either good or bad. For example a good habit could be to brush your teeth for 2 minutes morning and night… and a bad habit could be to drink a sugary coffee straight afterwards

As we get older and forge our place in the world it is important to look after ourselves and make our lives as easy as we can. This can mean a lot of things, but an easy way to look after ourselves right away is to change our habits for the better.

Today we are going to take a look at the best ways to nurture good habits in your life and how to ensure that you stay on track.

Make a wish board

The first thing you can do if you want to change your habits and lifestyle for the better is to make a wish board of exactly what you want to achieve. A wish board is a collage of words and images which show you things such as a car you want, a house you’d want to afford and where you want to be next year. When it comes to changing habits this is the most effective tool because it will be a constant reminder of WHY you want to change.

For example you could motivate yourself to take a course with Norwich University Online to become qualified and change your career so that you can afford the lifestyle you want. Having a clear goal will help you immensely when you are trying to be motivated.

Start small

The most crucial mistake that people can make when they try to change their habits is to start too big. If from the outset you plan to write a whole book by the end of the year to publish, this is a task which can be overwhelming and difficult to manage. However if you set a goal such as coming up with 3 character profiles in a week, then a few stories the week after… this is more manageable. Doing things like this will allow you to compartmentalise your work into bite size chunks.

Get hooked

The key to keeping a good habit is to enjoy doing it. It is incredibly important for you if you want to change your lifestyle that you choose a habit which you love. For example, you might want to get fit, but doing yoga every day might make you feel sick. It is important not to force yourself to do things that you hate because these can have an effect on your ability to stick to a habit. If there is something you don’t like, put it to the side and try an alternative.

Celebrate small wins

The wins can never be too small when you are trying to install better habits into your life, and even the smallest thing can be applauded and made the most of to motivate you. Let’s say you are trying to eat healthier. If you try a new recipe and you enjoy it, this can be a win worth celebrating and it is something which can make a huge difference to you and your motivation.

Surround yourself with positive people

It is important when you are trying to make a change in your life that you surround yourself with people who will support you every step of the way. Having those around you who will support you and help you succeed will change the landscape of your lifestyle and make it much easier for you to find success. Even better, find someone who is willing to go the extra mile and do things with you and this can make a massive impact on your ability to succeed.

Pre plan

If you know you want to reach a goal by a certain time, it will be much easier for you to reach that goal. For example, if you were to think about losing weight this year, you might plan to wear a specific dress or shirt to an event in a few months time. You will have to change your habits to get to this stage and this means that you will need to work harder to reach this goal as soon as you can. Make sure that you pre plan every aspect of a goal so that you are almost forced to make the changes and be better this year.
