When we interviewed HR EXPERT – Shabana Makhlouf, HR Director – it was apparent that she  knows quite a bit about working in both the public and private sectors, which is a positive rarity nowadays!

She started out in a different role / function and then moved into HR. She followed a step by step promotion path which led her to being a HR Director in the UK.

Any student entering the people operations industry should review the program of study they are interested in and see if it provides for their career and personal goals. You need to like your job!

You may have a degree in HR, studying for your MBA with a HR direction or not studied before. But you will have chosen to pursue a career in human resources (GREAT), if you are one of the many individuals looking to take this path, you will find there is a lot of competition out there!

The need for education in order to have a successful career has become the standard (unfortunately!), and combined with a harsh economic environment it has made individuals lacking such education seek out opportunities by for example returning to learning – there are other ways.

Just because a program is designated human resources it does not necessarily make it appropriate for your needs. Truly make sure that it fits with your career goals and reflects your individual needs.

The decision to return for studies is difficult, but it is reflective of the needs of the individual who has made that decision, and one does need not be embarrassed for seeking education to better their life at any age. As a potential HR professional, individuals will have to learn to work in situations and conduct tasks that are often difficult or counter to one’s personality, and overcoming such adversity, be it embarrassment or rejecting at interviews or some other issue, is essential to success in the field.
