What Makes A Great Care Home Manager?

Working in a care position means that, by nature, you have what it takes to know what people need. You are empathetic, you are intuitive, and you have the sensitivity to know what it takes to look after other people.

Being in the caring industry is a challenge, from being a carer to being a manager there are a lot of things that you have to consider when you take on a role in such a vulnerable place.

When you rise up the ranks and decide to move into a position of management, you are under a significant amount of pressure.

You have to balance the needs of your patients with their family expectations and being able to keep the care home you run in the black.

When you manage a staff in such a high-stress environment, the expectations on you are strong.

There are a lot of factors outside your control, but you are able to ensure that your care facility has the bet equipment and people within it so that life can be comfortable for the service users.

There’s a lot to think about, from the caterers that you use for mealtimes to the medication carts for assisted living that can be purchased for each floor of the home.

But what makes such a good care home manager?

And how can you ensure that you are giving the best care to your patients?

Good Motivation.

Great care managers are highly motivated. In their efforts, they see each day as a challenge to be conquered and the comfort of their service users is what keeps them moving forward in their role. There is a strong desire to help other people, which is what led people to the care industry in the first place.

Personality.

The good thing about the care industry is that you can fit any personality type and you can fit in. The one thing you absolutely do need to have is a thick skin, especially if you are dealing with scared and upset family members as well as confused and vulnerable service users. You must be ready to embrace new practices and new technologies, educating yourself and taking courses where possible. A willingness to go the distance doesn’t hurt!

Team-Oriented.

A care home is not run with a single hand. Every caregiver, administrative support person and manager in the care facility is there to help you run things and ensure that there is more than enough help for you when you need it. You need to be able to work as part of a team as well as be the person in charge when you need to be.

Don’t be afraid to go for a role as a care manager if you think the role can fit you. It takes someone truly detail-oriented and able to handle the high-pressure of such a position, and if that’s you, then you should feel lucky that you have the strength of character for such a role.
