HR Faux Pas You’ve Got To Avoid
If you are working in HR for the first time, or you are thinking about running a business, you need to make sure that you are going to look after your employees properly.
This is an absolute essential of keeping the HR going strong and ensuring that the business is moving in the right direction, and it’s not something you can overlook easily. Being sure that you are taking care of your people is a hugely important part of looking after any business, so let’s take a look at some of the things which are actually going to be involved here.
As long as you are avoiding a few specific faux pas, you should find that you are able to take much better care of your employees in general, and that you are therefore running your business as you should be running it, without upsetting anyone or otherwise.
Unfair Pay
If you are employing one person or a thousand, you need to make sure that you’re paying each and every one as well as you can. This is something you can’t overlook, and yet it can be so easy to do so if you are not paying attention. Most of the time, unfair pay is not done on purpose – but even so you will need to make sure that you are going to be making this particularly bad mistake.
If you do, it could mean that you end up in a lot of trouble, as well as just upsetting the people who work for you, which is also something you want to avoid where possible.
You need to have a proper payroll system and proper management of it if you are to be able to avoid this particular problem, and you must ensure that you have the right kind of approach and attitude to get it right as well. If not, you could find that you are in a lot of trouble indeed, and that you are going to end up causing a lot of drama and hassle for your employees in general.
Discrimination
Nobody needs to be discriminated at work, and this is something that you need to absolutely be keeping in control of if you are going to make sure you’re being the best employer you can be. If there is any discrimination in your business at all, it is only going to lead to bad things, and you might find that it is amazing just how much of a difference it can make to the culture of a workplace too.
As well as being illegal and immoral, it also just makes the act of working in that particular workplace much less pleasant for everyone – yourself included. The last thing you want is this, or to find that you have employment discrimination lawyers calling you up demanding answers.
In order to make sure that you are not discriminating anyone, you need to think about having rules in place to avoid that happening. That is the only real way to ensure that it is going to be avoided, and that people are going to be able to take the proper action if they do find there to be some discrimination taking place in their place of work.
Avoiding discrimination goes far beyond that, however – it is about developing and encouraging a culture which is going to keep discrimination at bay as much as possible, something which can take time and a particular kind of focus to make happen. The harder you work at it, however, the more likely it is that you will be able to keep it at bay. That is likely to be hugely important for on just your employees, but yourself as well.
Overlooking Individuals
Something that can happen all too easily at any place of work is that certain people find themselves being ignored. When this happens, it generally means that they are not going to appreciate the employer or place of work, and that they find it much harder to be able to do their work in the way they would like to or expect.
If you find that you overlook individuals in your workplace, it is going to leave to a bitter and divided workforce, with some people being favoured above others. This is the last thing you want to do if you are hoping to keep your team as united as possible, and therefore you should make sure that this is not happening in your workplace.
To avoid overlooking individuals, it helps if you personally take an interest in people when they become part of your team. Do that, and you will find that you have a much more respected workforce, and that they know this well as well.
However, conversely overlooking individuals will mean that you are much more likely to find yourself in trouble with some of your employees – and that only means that you wont’ get out of them what you are hoping for.
Unsafe Keeping Of Files
There are certain files you need to keep on your employees by law, and it is a good idea to make sure that you are doing so if you want to be able to keep in line with the awl at all times.
These files might include their right to work documents, or a copy thereof at least, and any applications and interview notes upon acceptance. It will also mean that you have a record of any disciplinary action you might have taken, and that you keep files on anything that might be of note. This is important, and what’s just as important is ensuring that you do whatever you can to keep those files safe.
It is your duty to make sure that you are protecting their personal data, after all, and you need to ensure that you are doing putting their privacy or identity at risk in any way. Therefore, kep files locked away, and digital files encoded. That will ensure that you are taking the necessary steps towards keeping their data safe.
