How To Improve Employee Retention

When you run a business, a big part of ensuring it is successful is keeping your employees happy and motivated. After all, without your employees you won’t have a company – they are the essential cogs that keep the machine working. No matter what industry you are in, whether it be a marketing job, writing job or a regional flatbed truck driver job, the core essence of keeping employees happy is the same. If you find that you are having a high staff turnover and can’t figure out why we have put together some top tips that will hopefully take your numbers a bit lower.

Give credit and praise where it’s due

If your employees have been doing a good job, tell them! It can be easy to overlook achievements, particularly if someone is a consistently excellent worker, but it’s important that you recognise and praise them when they work hard. The last thing you want is for someone to not feel valued and wonder why they even put work in if it is going to go unnoticed.

Offer employee perks

There are many employee perks that you could offer, however, this doesn’t mean you need extravagant things such as a pool table and nap pods. Employee perks can just be simple things such as providing tea and coffee or offering time off to go to the dentist and doctors. You could give them a half-day off on their birthdays, or let them finish an hour early on a Friday. There are many things you can offer, but they will help the employees to feel like you care for their wellbeing both mentally and physically.

Ensure there is good career progression

People have careers that they wish to progress in. This is why it is important you show people that they can work their way up the ranks, getting into a career that they wish to. Have meetings with them and find out what they wish to do and where they want to be in a certain amount of years or months. Tell them what they will need to do in order to help achieve that position, such as going on courses or doing certain tasks.

Have employee reviews and appraisals

Employee appraisals are important to find out where their head is at and also let them know if there are ways they can improve or what they can continue doing well. It is a chance to receive feedback from employees on how they feel their role is going and if they have any other comments on the company as a whole. It can give you a good idea of how they are feeling and if you get an inkling they aren’t happy, you can nip it in the bud.

These are just a few simple tips that can help you to improve employee retention. By implementing these you will soon find that you have much happier staff, a lower turnover rate and a more successful business.
