Job Interview Tips For Modern Times

Trying to land a new job is always stressful. You could be an expert at your industry, have all the skills necessary, and years of experience to back you up. But there will always be that constant heart pump that leaves you feeling anxious.

The worst part is you fear that because of this, you may not have what it takes to breeze through the interview.

The good news is that you are not alone. Almost 90% of adults are afraid of Interviews in the United States. Through this article, we plan to give you a couple of tips to help you stay level-headed during your next interview to land your dream job. Well, what are we waiting for? Let’s get into it.

It All Starts With The Preparation

When it comes to preparing for your interview, the first thing to do is to make sure you know what the company is all about. Do your research, figure out exactly how they like to come across, and what they need to do to make that happen.

That way if the employer asks you company-centric questions, you can show off your ability to research and plan out responses prior to meetings, which shows initiative, and the willingness to actually put in the effort.

There are tons of ways you can check out what a company is all about. From their website, right through to various Social Media profiles such as LinkedIn, Twitter, and even Instagram.

Make Sure You Remove Redundant Information From Your C.V

Remember, when going into an interview, you don’t want to have your life story jotted down on a piece of paper. All your potential employer cares about is:

  • Who are you?
  • Why are you qualified for this job?
  • Where did you graduate?
  • Where did you work prior to this? What work experience do you have, if any?

As long as you outline this in your resume, you are off to a good start! Struggling to create a glowing resume that shows off everything you have to offer? Don’t stress it – there are plenty of amazing C.V. templates and guides to help get you started.

Your First Impression Is The Best Chance You Are Going To Get

You have three seconds.

The time it took you to read that sentence, that’s how long you have to make a positive first impression and get the meeting started off on the right foot.

What? How on Earth am I supposed to do that? Is probably what you are thinking.

Well, the first part is dress to impress. Make sure that you are well groomed, and are wearing appropriate attire for the interview. This will say a lot about your character.

Next, it’s all about body language. Be positive, smile, and shake your interviewer’s hand when greeting them. Be sure to not slouch and seem unenergized as this will just leave a negative impression, which is definitely not the way to start off an interview.

Remember, the more confident you are, the more likely this interview you will be a success.

Use The S.T.A.R Method To Answer Interview Questions

So, you have the awesome CV, you started the meeting off with confidence, setting the right type of first-impression to boost your probability of success, what comes next?

Well, now it’s time to get to the entire point of an interview, the questions.

It’s all good to repeatedly mention how hard working you are, and the fact that you are a team player. But, at the end of the day, that’s not what companies look for when searching for the perfect candidate for the job.

The first step to preparing for the questions is to find popular interview questions in your industry. For example, here are some of the most common interview questions for programmers.

Be sure to go through these questions often, so that when the time comes you can answer them without any hesitation. Further illustrating your expertise in the industry.

However, one important thing that tons of people make is rambling. Which is why the S.T.A.R formula was created.

Situation:

Let’s say you get a scenario based question. If X is doing Y what would you do to solve it?

Well, the first thing you want to do is put it into context. Illustrate the story of what is going on, and why it is happening. Keep it short, sweet and to the point.

Task:

Now it’s time to dive into the deep end. Explain exactly what the problem is, and the steps necessary to solve the problem in a timely manner. Also, feel free to illustrate possible side-consequences of the problem.

Action:

Here is where you get to flaunt your expertise. Explain exactly, in step by step detail how you would personally go about solving this problem. Feel free to mention solutions for any collateral damage as well. As this will show your willingness to think out the box and go the extra mile.

Results:

Finally, draw the explanation to a close. Explain what the perfect outcome would be. And what you would have learned from the situation to help the company ensure that it does not happen again.

And there you have it. With these simple steps, you can overcome even the toughest of interviews, and land your dream job.

So, what are you waiting for? Go get it!
