The Best And Worst Aspects Of A Career In Teaching

Some people love the idea of taking on a career in teaching. It might be wanting to be part of the journey to shaping young minds, teaching children in their early years or helping them through the high school season. Or it could be that you want to help adults develop, learn and progress in their career or later in life.

Teaching can be such a rewarding career, but like all, there are some great bits, and some of the worst aspects of the job role. With that in mind, here are some of the things to think about.

The best bits

It is always good to start off with something a little more positive and there are many aspects of teaching that can give you such huge job satisfaction at the end of the day. Here are some of them.

The rewarding aspect

One of the first things to mention is how rewarding this career can be.

Being able to teach and learn with children can be an excellent skill to have, and not many people possess the patience or the nurturing attitude and personality to do it well.

You will see great reward in the effort you put in to children and adults.

You will see them thrive and want to do well, and for a teacher, especially if someone has been struggling, to see them flourish can be the biggest reward anyone can offer.

The teacher gifts at the end of term

There are some big bonuses for teachers. One huge one is having the time off which can work exceptionally well if you have your own family. But, there is no denying that the teacher gifts at Christmas and the end of the school year is a huge bonus.

You can have anything from someone gifting shirts for teachers that many be personalised to the grade or school year they teach. It might be something alcoholic or chocolate related. Maybe even vouchers or a way to pamper yourself during the time off. Some people really think outside of the box and the sentiment can be very touching.

Being part of progression

Last of all, being part of progression with children and adults can be a great way to feel like you are doing a job well done. You get to be part of their journey, and that can be the best aspect of the job right there.

The worst bits

Of course, like many careers, there will be downsides to it, so you may need to think about this to ensure it is the right career for you. On the one hand there aren’t too many, but some teachers may argue that there is a lot more paperwork and from filling required these days than there may have been a number of years ago.

You also need to take into account that while teachers do get the holidays and vacation time, they work incredibly long hours and it isn’t just the school day. Their day can start a few hours before and finish a few hours after due to work, marking, lesson planning and also extracurricular activities that they may need to run.

Let’s hope this has given you a good overview of a career in teaching.
