Your Cleaners: Why They Should Be As Appreciated As Your Employees

is that there are so many people that underpin our organization, but we don’t always give thought to them. Your cleaners are people who, in many ways, do a thankless task. They are people that have to squeeze in around your needs, and so many people in a business treat cleaners like scum or like they are invisible. They need to be as appreciated as your employees. Why is this, and what do you need to do to appreciate them?

They Need the Right Tools Too!

Giving them the tools they need is going to make their job easier, and therefore, you can get on with yours. Ensuring they have floor buffers and other cleaning equipment to do the job means that they can work better. So many times, we don’t consider the hard work that goes into cleaning, but when was the last time you cleaned your house from top to bottom?

Hard work, wasn’t it?

Cleaners are doing this every single day. Give them the tools they need and they will be a lot more efficient.

Be Clear in Your Communication

Much like when we praise our employees, we need to inform them when they’ve made a positive impact on the workplace, which is such a simple thing, but if you start to make small talk with cleaners and realize that they are just as important as another member of the organization, this is going to set a great example for your employees.

Leaders need to work on the floor to get insight into this. Sometimes, we can see employees thinking that cleaner is beneath them because the employees clearly have an “important” job to do.

The fact is that everybody’s job is important. Nobody’s better or worse than anyone else, and it’s a very poor attitude that stems from a poor culture that would indicate if employees are treating cleaners accordingly.

Let Them Do Their Job!

We get in cleaners’ ways as much as they get in ours. If we are working after hours and take a step back for five minutes to let the cleaner wipe the desk down, we can get something else done while they are sorting this. You’ve got to remember that they have a system that they put in place, and they may only be working a four-hour shift, so you’ve got to make sure that they are able to do their job on time.

They have a deadline too, and the fact is that so many people can make complaints about the quality of the desk because it wasn’t cleaned, but why is this?

Did you not give them the space they need?

Create a Better Working Environment for Everyone

We also focus on trying to create a more efficient business, but we need to realize the working environment should be supportive of everyone’s needs. We need to create a better working mindset for everybody, and this means we’ve got to start treating everybody the same. Cleaners are the unsung heroes and they are not given the credit.

Perhaps it is time to do so?
