Is Your Career Leaving You Unfulfilled?

It’s pretty common for many of us to find ourselves in careers that leave us totally unfulfilled. Sure, a lot of people have ideas of what they would rather be doing but life often gets in the way and we’ve all got to earn a living. That leads people to fall into the kinds of careers that might help them earn money but otherwise leave them utterly unfulfilled, just spending the days trying to get through it until they can finally go home. But is that the way that it really needs to be?

Here are some questions that you need to ask yourself if you want to try and find a more fulfilling career.

What do you really want?

This might seem like the simplest question in the world. After all, it’s something we ask of children all the time: “What do you want to be when you grow up?”

However, the truth is that it’s a lot more complicated than you might think.

  • After all, it’s not just what do you enjoy but what are you truly passionate about?
  • What can you see yourself doing day in and day out for years at a time?

That’s something that a lot of people don’t think about all that often.

What are you good at?

Of course, it’s not just a matter of what you want, it’s also a matter of what you can do. Where do your skills lie? After all, if you’re working any job and you have no idea what you’re doing, that’s just going to make the whole experience miserable for you.

Of course, there is always training available if you find something you really want.

  • Maybe you want to start up your own business? There are hundreds of online courses and degrees that you can take to develop your skills.

Is now the right time?

You also need to think about this decision in practical terms. Sure, you might want to quit your job and start over but that often means taking a cut in your income and that might not be something you’re able to do. If you live with a partner then you need to discuss it with them. It might be the case that you need to hold off on making this change, at least for a little while, until you’re more secure.

One of the biggest barriers stopping a lot of people from going after a career that they really want is fear.

People are afraid that if they try going for something that they really want and then they fail that there will be nothing left but to go back to a job that they hate. However, you need to remember that just because you get knocked back or rejected once, that doesn’t mean that you have to give up.

If you’ve found a career path that you really want then you need to be willing to fight for it.
